Outline

You will study modules in three disciplines; Criminology, Law and Psychology. 

 

Criminology units: 

  • The Criminology of Prisons

  • Theories of Crime Causation 

  • Criminological Practice 

  • Offender Profiling 

  • Forensic Evidence  

  • Terrorism, The State and Civil Liberty  

 

Law units: 

  • Non-fatal Offences against the Person 

  • Homicide 

  • Police Powers in England and Wales 

  • The Jury System  

  • Negligence 

 

Psychology units: 

  • Aggression 

  • Social Perspectives in Mental Health 

  • Early Social Development  

 

In addition to the above units, you will study a number of core skills units which will enable you to develop the academic skills necessary for studying on the Access to HE course and beyond.

Progression

Successful completion of the course will enable progression onto various degree courses. This pathway is designed for progression onto programmes with a focus on criminology and/ or criminal law. However, students have also progressed onto courses such as Counselling and Psychotherapy, Law, Forensic Psychology and Criminal Investigation. This course provides an excellent academic foundation. A number of students go on to study at Russell Group universities. 

Assessment

The total achievement of the Access to HE Diploma is 60 credits.  Of these 60 credits, 45 credits must be achieved at level 3 from graded units which are concerned with academic subject content.  The remaining 15 credits must be achieved at level 2 or level 3 from units which are ungraded

Entry Requirements

Grade 4 (C) or above in GCSE English and Mathematics (or equivalent).
