Outline

The Certificate in Community Interpreting provides you with the practical skills and theoretical knowledge needed to work as an interpreter in a variety of community settings. Over 15 weeks, you will cover key areas such as:
Principles and Ethics of Interpreting – Understand the ethical guidelines and professional standards expected of community interpreters.

Language Skills and Techniques – Develop your ability to interpret both spoken and written language accurately and effectively.

Cultural Sensitivity – Learn how cultural differences can impact communication and how to navigate these in a professional setting.

Interpreting in Context – Gain experience interpreting in real-life community settings, such as healthcare, legal, and social services environments.

Confidentiality and Professional Conduct – Understand the importance of confidentiality and professional conduct when working with clients in sensitive situations.

This course will provide you with the tools you need to work in a wide range of community settings, helping to bridge language barriers and support effective communication.

Progression

Upon completing the Certificate in Community Interpreting, you can progress to further qualifications such as the Level 3 Diploma in Public Service Interpreting, where you can specialise in more complex interpreting tasks, including legal or healthcare interpreting. Alternatively, you can apply your skills in community or voluntary organisations, local government, healthcare settings, or as a freelance interpreter. The course will also provide you with a strong foundation to pursue career opportunities in translation or bilingual services.
